Alice was dynamic and a born leader. She believed in excellence in all that she did.
She was dedicated to the Daughters of the Nile and was well versed in the protocol. This lady knew her references by heart! She could not only answer the question, but point you to the right source, usually including the specific page to check.
Alice was stylish, classy, and sharp. She designed costumes for the dances she taught us. She was a great resource and knew just how to accessorize an outfit. Many times I borrowed her shoes for style shows!
Then there was the time I was invited to a theme birthday party. All the invitees were to come dressed as a princess. When I told Alice about the party, she had just the outfit - a sari with a tiara!
Alice could adapt to any group. She had much in common with all walks of life. Alice was charming and had a broad spectrum of interests, always comfortable wherever she was, with whom ever she was with.
Alice joined me in a number of personal and professional activities. One time she went with me to a boat christening in Seattle for my Alaskan cousins. Come to find out she knew some of the people at the family event. What a small world!
Another time she went with me to a retirement party for one of my co-workers. No matter what or where, she was a fun person to be with and everyone enjoyed her company.
Alice was a mentor and a guide. She will be missed.

After seeing one of Alice's polynesian shows my grandfather turned to me and said "why aren't you doing that?" And with that my life and hula merged into one. I was 11 years old. Now at the age of 52 I am still dancing and studying. I am so glad I was able to spend a weekend with Alice last spring. We had a wonderful time reminiscing and laughing. She was a very special person in my life. Her teachings gave me a strong foundation and the "girls" she gathered for her group were all just as special. I wish she could be here now to reap what she sowed. I will be forever greatful. She is truly loved and will be deeoly missed. Me ke aloha palena'ole e Alice.

Alice and I became freinds around 1977 through Daughters of the Nile. We would see each other quite often in our travels to different Temples. I will always be grateful that we were friends. She lived and loved Daughters of the Nile and when I needed help she stepped right up to the plate to help me. I was amazed at her knowlege of the history of Daughters of the Nile and her ability to not only know our laws, but to remember them. She wa there to help me as well as her Zora Temple. I know she worked many days and nights for our order. What a true and loyal friend. I will miss her so much---as we all will that knew her. We know she suffered so much this past year. She is safe wth God now and can breath with ease.

Alice you will be dearly missed. You were a very special person in my life. We first met when I was 12-13 years old at your Dance and Skate Shop. There my Mother and I talked about Hawaiian dancing which you were wanting to start teaching out of your home in Saratoga, Ca. My Mother who was born in Makeweli, Kauai took a big interest in having me continue my Hula lessons and Alice there you were. I was so excited and I was one of the first two students who started Hula lessons with you. I am now 56 years old and I still dance Hula. It has never left me. You were a great teacher "Kumu" and you taught us well. I will never forget you and all the memories that you gave us. The wonderful Hula shows that we would perform and the closest you brought to all your students "Haumana". You taught us perfection in our hula and that will never leave us. I am glad that I was able to visit with you when you would come to California. To dance for you one more time and to see your eyes light up with all the proudness you have for your "Girls". Alice "Kehea Nani" the Aloha Spirit will be with you forever as the memories will stay within our hearts forever. Mahalo!
Aloha Nui Loa,
Paulette "Lehua" Hendrickson
ps: You presented me with my Hawaiian name "Lehua" and this name will stay with me forever! Mahalo for giving me such a beautiful name!

Alice had quite a way with words. In 2000 - I helped Alice by adjusting the headlights on her old car. She composed a poem about the event!
Oh Danny Boy The Lights, The Lights Are Shining
From Side To Side, And Down The Great Wide Road,
Darkness Is Gone And Now My Time I'm Biding
It's You, It's You, That Lifted My Great Load.
But I'll Be Back When Summer's In The Meadow
Or When I Cross The Mountains White With Snow
Oh I’ll Be There In Sunshine Or In Shadow
Oh Danny Boy, Oh Danny Boy, You Helped Me So.
(No More Treetops) Your Grandmother Alice Malek

Alice and my Mom, Lucille Wood, were friends for years and I would visit with her there. Then Vianna, Peggy and I took dancing lessons from her on Friday nights at her home in Lacey. We had a lot of fun and performed a lot of places. I will miss her very much.

As a Past Queen of Zora Temple, I worked with Alice for many years. She was a hard worker and loved her Daughters of the Nile.
She was in our Patrol also. She will be missed, especially her high
heels and sassy clothes. My sympathy and Nile Love to all of her
family.
