We are so sorry to hear about your loss, and leave our prayers for your family.
He worked with our family as a doctor for my son Chace since he was very young and now he is 10 yrs old and helped us understand the problems that my son had having Auspbergers and took very good care of him and we will miss him alot. He also was my daughters doctor and she says she hopes his kids are doing ok and that she wants them to know that she prays for them, and was glad to have been able to have known their father. She is 12 yrs old and is sorry that her and her brother will have to see another doctor.
Thank you for the chance of letting us write and let you know how he made a difference in our lives and will really miss his great attitude and care that he gave us.

Mitch displayed that quiet dignity and pride in all that he accomplished. Mitch was truly one of a kind and I can only imagine the good things he did for his community.

Mitch's untimely death still seems incomprehenible. He still had so much to offer -- as a country doctor, friend, son, brother, husband, and father. And yet, I am amazed at what a legacy he left in 39 short years. I met Mitch when he was an intern, and already then his leadership potential was obvious, so seeing his growth as a physician leader was no surprise. However, his commitment to family always came first -- he declined numerous leadership opportunities because he was not willing to take that time away from his family. He was the type of physician -- and more importantly, the type of person -- we all want to be when we grow up. To Michelle, Chase, Ellie, Victoria, Al, Tina, Alisa, and all who knew and loved Mitch, I hope the memories of a life well lived provide comfort and peace to help ease the grief.

Iam so thankful for the man and doctor Mitch was; caring, compassionate, honest, dedicated, accepting, are just a few words that come to mind. I had the privilege of working with him at times in the hospital but remember him most fondly for taking care of two of my special needs children, he was amazing with them, their favorite physician by far! There fondest memory is of him writing a prescription for Alex to be able to have tastes of pudding (he was tube fed but liked to nibble on pudding). Mitch was truly one of a kind!! I'm so sorry to hear about MItch's passing. He was one of my favorite medical students when he spent a month with me near the end of his medical school days. I was especially proud of him for 2 things: he had seen a patient of mine a couple of times in the month he was working with me, and they connected so well, that she ended up following him, when I left Olympia, and he was a resident. She continued being his patient from the very beginning of his career. I also enjoyed his perspectives that he offered and published in the Family Practice Managment Journal. He was wise beyond his years. The community will truly miss him, as I will too.

My elderly mother was a patient of SPFM and Dr. Cohen was on duty when she came in with a fractured hip. I cannot begin to describe how incredibly kind and sweet he was to my mother, an Alzheimer’s patient. She could be a bit of a pistol but he just carried on in his kind and gentle way. He treated her with such dignity. And, after the diagnosis was made and her treatment plan decided on, he asked me how I was doing! I can see from many other posts further evidence of his generous spirit. It is a tragedy to lose him has a father, husband, son, etc. at such a young age. I hope all will take comfort and celebrate the fact that you had him in your lives, even if the time was too short. My prayers are with you.

And even when the time for posting here is past, he will not be forgotten. My first year of residency after a particularly difficult night, Mitch was the attending, and after I signed out all that had gone on, he asked how I was coping emotionally. Just last week I went to the preceptor desk for extra advice because he was there. He was a talented educator. We are shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Cohen's passing, and we offer our sympathies to his family, friends and all who loved him. Two years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to spend a good portion of the day with Dr. Cohen at his clinic office in Elma. He had contacted me at KPLU news about his views on his profession and the subject of health care reform. I asked if he would be open to an interview for our series called "The Meaning of Work," and he agreed. While he was certainly articulate in our interview about his work as a physician, it was Dr. Cohen's passion for the people in his life that I remember most: love for his family, friends, and the people of Thurston and Grays Harbor counties. He visited me when I was in the hospital with a massive infection and when I was in Montesano rehab when my hip was broken. He cheered when I was able to take a few steps when I became paralyzed. He didn't have to do these things ( he did it on his days off) he did it because he really cared. I know he treated all his patients with the same loving care.

I would not be alive today if it were not for his "hunch" that I had a pulmonary embolism after the birth of my son last August. I was unbelievably saddened to receive this news today. I attended Whitman with Mitch and I remember him fondly as extremely intelligent, kind, and well liked by everyone. I knew that his career goal was to become a physician, but I did not know what an accomplished and beloved doctor he had become. As someone who works in heath care, I know that a person who chooses to specialize in rural family medicine is someone with a true love of medicine and the patients they care for. My heart hurts for his family, friends, and the community he served.

I got to know Mitch when he attended medical school at Loyola where I am the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Cohen family at this painful time of sudden loss and grief. Mitch was a wonderful, bright and highly accomplished student. It is comforting to know that while his time with us was cut short, he generously shared his many talents and gifts to the fullest with his family, friends and patients.

I am so very sorry to hear about Mitch. As his former elementary teacher at Lakeridge, I knew he would continue to do good in the world. I fondly remember his sweetness, bright & inquisitive mind, and the fun he had with his buddy, Scott Florsheim. Please know my heart aches for you Al, Tina, Alisa, and Mitch's new little family. May you all find comfort in loving memories and peace in the days ahead. Sincerely, Nancy

As senior chaplain at Stritch School of Medicine, I knew Mitch during his medical studies, and remember him well. Reading what friends now say about him, I'm so glad to see that he became the doctor and the human being he wanted to be: superb in both categories. My sympathy on your great loss, and my confident prayers that Dr. Mitch will be awaiting us all in a better place.

No words will ever express our deep grief when we read the paper this morning. Tina and Albert have been friends...well with Al, since Franklin HS...so we have longevity....and the deep emotions you all share at this time can never be assuaged by a few words from me. I can only hope the memories of Mitchell's life and his accomplishments to thousands somehow ease your deep grief. However tragic his passing, you were blessed to know him these 40 years, and how he changed your lives, and the joy he gave to his mother and father. His lasting legacy will be all the people he touched in his professional life, the love for his wife Michelle, and the lineage of 3 grandchildren that will forever carry his name and dna. I can relate because my first set of parents died when I was 5 (father) and 12 (mother)...I am now 67 and their memory is still vivid and vibrant. I speak to them mostly every day and hope that I have turned out to be the son they were hoping I would become. They have never aged from the last time I saw them, and they continue to guide me to become the person they always thought I could become. Life will go on, and Mitchell's light will be everlasting. My deepest prayers are with you all in this unexplainable time. In your grief may God grant you the solace that Mitchell's presence will always be with you. I pray for your family. Charlie Staadecker
