Obituary of Walter G. Miller

Walter, age 75, passed away due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease on June 24, 2014, in Vancouver, Washington. He was born April 6, 1939, in Seattle, Washington to Walter G. Miller Sr. and Catherine Benson Miller. Walt also lived in the Seattle area (Queen Anne 1968-75, Magnolia 1975-93), Burien 1993-2002, and Olympia 2002-05. Walt graduated from Aberdeen’s Weatherwax High School in 1957, and attended the University of Washington in Seattle 1957-60 and 1985-88, at which time he received his Bachelor of Arts in Education. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963, stationed in Rothwesten, West Germany. He married Barbara Krall on February 22, 1965 in Aberdeen; they divorced in 1993. Professionally, Walt was a teacher and coach, working fulltime in the Seattle Public School District from 1991 to 2003. He was Assistant Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator at O’Dea High School (1985-87), Assistant Football Coach at Ingraham High School (1989-92), and Head Football and Baseball Coach at Chief Sealth High School (1995-2002). Coaching is what he lived for and what made him happiest. He loved watching all Seattle sports franchises and high school sporting events. He also loved fishing with his dad and brother. Walt acted as campaign treasurer for State Representative Helen Sommers from her first campaign in 1970 until he moved. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima in Seattle. Walt is survived by son, Mark D. Miller and wife, Kristine Miller, and their sons Drew and Luke Miller of Vancouver, Washington; daughter, Jessica L. Hollingsworth and husband Nathan Hollingsworth, and their daughters Anna and Emma Hollingsworth; brother, Jerry Miller of Vancouver, Washington; sisters, Charlene Hunt and husband Sam Hunt of Olympia, and Lorna Snyder; and brother-in-law, Jim Bush. He was predeceased by his sister, Kris Bush, and his parents. Memorial donations may be made to Kaiser Permanente Hospice Program, Our Lady of Fatima School in Seattle, or St. Mary’s School in Aberdeen.
