I was so sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. I worked with him at the Attorney General’s Office, first in the Law Library and later when he worked as a paralegal. He was always ready with a smile and a good story or joke. My deepest condolences to his family.

When I think of people I’ve enjoyed working with most, Gene immediately comes to mind. We worked together at the Attorney General’s Law Library for several years and during that time Gene shared great stories, good advice and a recipe for chili-frito-cheese pie that my daughters just loved! Gene lived an interesting life and his good humor, hearty laugh and caring nature will be missed. I am so thankful to have known him! My sincere condolences to Hoa and all his family members. May he rest in peace.

I and my wife have known Gene and Hue for over twenty years. The girls spoke in Vietnamese and Gene and I talked long and hard about our war experiences and how they relate to life in America today. Gene love to tell stories and both he and his wife loved to laugh. My wife Anh and I enjoyed their company immensely. When I heard of his passing two thoughts crossed my mind, one another VN Vet has passed and a good friend. God love him and Hua!

Although we had lost contact over the years, Gene always had a very special place in my heart. We met and became friends through the Thurston County Refugee Center. Just yesterday I came upon a journal entry I made in 1987 about Gene, and then learned today that the world has lost this amazing soul. Hope it’s ok to share the following:
“I liked him immediately, like at first sight; when I first volunteered to tutor ESL. I could feel and see his goodness immediately. He was real, he was solid, he was strong, and he had a lot to give. He’s a wonderful man with an enormous heart. Shy, reticent refugees would come out of their shell around Gene. He could speak some Vietnamese, but most of all his warmth and understanding shone through all barriers of language. He’s very smart and he is humble. His sense of humor is a gas. He volunteers a lot of time at the Center. When he’s not there, he’s helping his Vietnamese friends; working on their cars, trucks, houses, applications, etc. He is a very special person to so many.”
Gene made this world a better place. I am so sorry for Hoa, Tamara, and all of his close family and friends. May you bask in your memories of Gene, as you make your journey through your grief over his passing.
love and blessings to you.

I knew Gene as a teenager before he married my sister. Although I had not seen him for many years, he has always been my brother-in-law. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.
