Jay and I first met in a biweekly Parkinson's exercise class in Olympia. I knew we would become good friends the first time we met.Jay had a firm yet gentle handshake. He had an engaging smile and a natural twinkle in his eyes. Sometimes I could see a good natured mischievousness in his expression that meant a joke or other fun comment was on the way. Jay had a way of putting those around him at ease. Our instructor often paired us up when practicing dance steps etc because of our similar energy and abilities. It never felt awkward. Sometimes we would salute each other with the peace sign from across the room. This is for you, my friend. PEACE!!!
It was very nice to meet you, JoAnn. Thanks for sharing the photos and memories of days gone by. It was very kind of you.

We were so glad to have known Jay, first meeting him at the church for Lahni's class and later talking with him at Christie's class. We remember his nice smile, gentle nature, fun sense of humor and fondness for the outdoors. He talked often about his wife, so we knew how special she was to him. Praying for peace for his family.

Thank you so much, Howard and Anne. Jay often talked of his fondness for both of you. It makes me smile to hear that others saw the same qualities in him that had me falling in love with him at fifteen. And ha! Both sets of parents said it’d never last. xo, JoAnn

Thank you, Wayne. I know Jay considered you his best friend and I was so grateful for your visit during his final days when it wasn't easy for him to share emotion and words, And I suspect it must have been difficult for you, but his evening was much brighter after your visit and he even made a Judge Judy joke. I’ll also be grateful for the hug I needed so much that day. It’s that irrepressible humor I miss the most. The house is empty of laughter these days.

To Jay’s family: I am so incredibly sorry about your loss. Even though I only had the privilege of working with Jay for a short time in the PD Moveit! exercise classes, he always had a smile, a sense of humor and enjoyed interacting with the other PD participants, especially Wayne! It was apparent to all how hard Jay tried to stay fit over the past several years. My favorite memory was how his face lit up when talking about his wonderful wife and the books she wrote. He is greatly missed.

Thank you, Christie.❤️ The classes always meant so much to Jay and they were also not only very helpful to his Parkinson’s agility and strength, they also provided a fun, social life. And yes, he is greatly missed. Our home lacks the daily laughter I’d come to count on during our 57 years together.

I have very few memories of me and my father spending time together just the two of us. One that has surfaced recently involves a true passion of his, hiking in the outdoors. I was either in college or early adulthood, no longer living at home but visiting. My parents had moved to a home near the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, a long stretch of undeveloped land that cuts through north Phoenix. You can walk for miles in it with almost no evidence of the massive development that is metropolitan Phoenix. Even though I was young and fairly fit, as a serious hiker he pushed the pace and I did my best to keep up. We didn't talk much on the hike. It wasn't like him to talk much with me anyway, so I took no offense. Instead we took in the silence, interrupted by the occasional scurrying of some small desert creature disturbed by our presence. It was a long hike, several miles, and I was pretty exhausted and dehydrated by the end of it. But I knew that my father had a passion for hiking, having done it all over Arizona, including multiple times in the Grand Canyon and also the challenging Paria Canyon. I appreciated him sharing a part of himself that day, even if his way of doing it was through action rather than words.

JoAnn, all my love to you. You've had a long road the past what...ten years? But in all that time, I've seen a gentle strength from you. I'm so sorry that you're now walking it solo, but your friends are here, and we honor who Jay was, his life, and what he brought to yours. Much love, Yasmine

Thank you so very much, Yasmine. Knowing your bond with Sam, I know you understand how Jay truly was my soulmate and although my heart is shattered, we both knew that we’d done our dance before and will do it again. Which honestly isn’t proving that much of a comfort right now. But kindness like yours helps. xoxo

I had the pleasure of getting to know Jay over the last few years. The first time I met him I knew that I had met a kind hearted soul. His kind blue eyes, our conversation about our love for animals, and our health/exercise commitment created some good conversations. As his health effected him later in July of 2022 I got to meet the love of his life , JoAnn. What a special relationship they both shared just watching the devotion of their love for one another was a special gift. In the bitter sweetness of his health deuterating I'm glad I got to know the stories of his life and how he had so many hidden talents and got to accomplish so many things. I hope that your pain free up in heaven hiking to the highest mountain peak for you have touched many life's with your great kind heart.

Jay was my former Father-in-Law and he was a sweet, soft-spoken man who always had a smile to offer, told funny Dad jokes, and enjoyed making things with wood. He loved to hike and ride and boat and he adored JoAnn. I always enjoyed speaking with him and I know he lived a full life doing the things he enjoyed. But I am sorry that Parkinson's shortened his walk here on Earth.
