Eva volunteered for many years in my courtroom. She was there to provide a human face to petitioners (mostly women) who were seeking protection from domestic violence. She helped provide calm and understanding in a court proceeding that could be terrifying and daunting. But she also provided compassion and assistance to those accused of domestic violence. One morning, in a makeshift courtroom in the old courthouse, I was presiding over the domestic violence calendar from behind a folding table set in front of rows of folding chairs. After hearing testimony from both sides in a case, I found that the respondent had committed domestic violence and granted the petitioner a protection order. The respondent, a man around 6’ 5” and weighing about 250 pounds charged up to the table where he glared down at me in a very threatening manner. Eva, about 5’ tall and maybe 110 pounds, watching all this came forward, spoke kindly and softly to the man, took his hand and walked him out of the courtroom. It worked because of her genuine humanity towards all persons and her tremendous courage and personal strength. I feel privileged to have known Eva and called her a friend.

I remember her fondly as a child who walked to Thriftway often to get candy. She was all spunky and no-nonsense with us kids. She was a prominent figure at the store and I enjoyed getting to know her over the years as i grew up. I recently saw her picture at the courthouse and made me think of her, this is a sad passing but what a great community life she lived.
