Obituary of Emilia Garcia Andrews

Emilia Garcia "Emily" Andrews passed away in her sleep on October 30, 2019. She had turned 90 on May 28. She was born in the Philippines, and finished secondary school in 1946, when she was 17. Then she tried to make a living in the capital, Manila, after a childhood around San Fernando, on the big island of Luzon.

 

Emily married Dean Andrews in the early 1960s and they emigrated with the five kids from the Philippines to the United States in 1970. After visiting Hawaii and Dean's relatives in the United States, they settled in Ephrata, Washington, near one of Dean's sisters, Eleanor. The children finished secondary school in Ephrata, and Emily and the kids became naturalized citizens during the U.S. Bicentennial celebrations in 1976.

 

Emily and Dean migrated to Olympia after the kids finished degrees in college: Paul from the University of Washington and the UW Law School, Grace from Washington State University, Joseph and Yvonne from the University of Washington, and Angelina from Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.  Emily held down the family fort and shepherded the kids transition to a new language, country and education. 

 

Emily lived in Olympia and was a member of the St. Michael Parish.  She and Dean loved to travel, visiting Dean's relatives in the Seattle area, Palm Springs in California, and Minnesota. They sometimes frequented local casinos for their retired diversions, including buffets and entertainment. 

 

After Dean passed away in 2008, Emily lived in the retirement-oriented apartments in downtown Olympia for several years, until she moved in full time with Grace in Lakewood the last few years and where she passed her final days.

 

Emily is survived by her eldest son, Paul, of Olympia; Grace of Lakewood; Joseph, who's adventuring in areas of South and Central America; daughters, Yvonne and Angelina, both of Olympia; three grandchildren, Dalton of Mill Creek, Adam Makoviney of Olympia, and Angela Makoviney, currently in Peace Corps-Moldova.

 

She was predeceased by her father, Teofilo; mother, Angela; and brothers, Andres and Richard, who remained in her birthplace, the Philippines.

 

Services have been held.
